Small houses, big trees and 7th Street at the end of the road.

Melville is the suburb people move to for the street life and stay in for the koppies. The houses are mostly modest and close together, which is exactly why the neighbourhood feels like one.

A little history

Melville was proclaimed in 1896 on part of the old Braamfontein farm and named after the land surveyor Edward Melvill. It sits west of the city, close to both the University of Johannesburg in Auckland Park and Wits in Braamfontein.

The houses

Mostly early twentieth century cottages and semis on smaller stands, many with pressed steel ceilings, timber floors and a front stoep onto the street. There are newer simplexes and some sectional title too.

The cafe, bookshop and restaurant strip most people know Melville for. Lively on weekend evenings, so homes a few blocks away are often the sweet spot.

4th Avenue and Main Road

Quieter shopping strips, with the supermarket on Main Road for the weekly shop.

Melville Koppies

A nature reserve and archaeological site on the suburb's edge, with grassland, rocky ridges and long views over the city.
